“Pagans, witches, and followers of other nature-based faiths vote across the political spectrum,” Pagan Awareness Network President David Garland said today. “Our Association isn’t interested in weighing into the politics, but dubbing a woman in a position of power as a ‘witch’ is cliched, stupid and offensive.”

He added: “Historically speaking, people accused others of being witches when they wanted to blame them for events they lacked the intellect and the science to understand. Storms wiping out crops, rains of toads, and so on. If a climate-change denier really sat down and thought about it, they would avoid the comparison at all costs.”

The Pagan Awareness Network Incorporated’s mission statement is to educate the community about pagan beliefs and practices, including witchcraft.

“Those protesting the proposed carbon tax have a right to protest, and so does every pagan out there,” Mr Garland said. “If anyone feels offended by the sexism and gutter politics of the ‘ditch the witch’ placard, they should feel free to contact their local Member of Parliament. Or they can contact Tony Abbott’s office directly on (02) 6277 4022 or email Tony.Abbott.MP@aph.gov.au – I have registered my strong objection and concern at my faith being vilified and seeing this supported by a politician. Will you do the same?”
